Our website gives you the chance to “visit” Cornerstone Chapel before even stepping into our building. Take this opportunity to find out what we believe, to listen to a teaching, or to learn about what’s available for children, students, and adults.
A couple of things that define our church would be:
- the systematic teaching through God’s Word, the Bible, and
- worshiping God with contemporary praise music. Our hearts’ desire is to see men, women, and children come into a personal relationship with God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.
But that’s only where it begins! Growing in that relationship with the Lord and developing friendships within the church are exciting parts of the journey.
And by way of special invitation… if you are within driving distance of Leesburg, Virginia, we would love to have you join us for any of our five weekly services and various events throughout the week. Feel free to contact us with any questions, prayer requests, or for more information. We hope to see you soon.
Pastor Gary Hamrick
Who We Are
Cornerstone Chapel is a community of believers in Jesus Christ that exists to glorify God through the teaching and application of God’s Word, and through personal and corporate Worship, with an emphasis on equipping believers for service within the church to strengthen the body of Christ, and for service outside the church to minister the gospel of Christ.
In May, 1994, we became affiliated with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, CA. Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa was founded by Pastor Chuck Smith in 1965 with 25 members. It has since grown to a weekly attendance of more than 30,000, and has over 1500 affiliate churches around the world.
Our affiliation with Calvary Chapel provides us with accountability and fellowship with a credible ministry while still allowing us to maintain our independent, non-denominational status. Each church is governed by its own leadership and selects its own pastors, elders and deacons. Ordination of ministers is also performed by the board of members of individual churches. Therefore, every church is entirely independent.
Calvary Chapel is not a denomination. We are not opposed to denominations as such, only their over-emphasis of doctrinal differences that have led to division in the Body of Christ. We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is His (agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess.
When you visit Cornerstone Chapel, our desire is that you see the love of Jesus Christ reflected through the systematic teaching of the Bible and through heart-felt worship of our Lord and Savior.
In all that we do, it is our desire to be known as a Church of the Word and Worship for equipping and serving.
Cornerstone Chapel began as a desire in the hearts of a handful of people committed to a common vision of planting a Bible-teaching, Christ-centered church in the Leesburg, Virginia area. As a historic town dating from 1758, Leesburg has a rich heritage of denominational churches and can even boast of being the place where the first Methodist church was planted in America.
But in 1990, some people sensed the need for a church that crossed denominational lines, uniting people from various church backgrounds and people without a church background at all. Eager for a church dedicated to solid, practical teaching of God’s Word, combined with genuine, heartfelt worship, these faithful families began holding services at Simpson Middle School in March of that same year. Eight months later, Pastor Gary Hamrick accepted the invitation from all 18 members to become the first full-time pastor beginning in January, 1991.
The Lord has continued to build His church, adding hundreds of families and single adults to our fellowship. In May, 1994, we became affiliated with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, CA. This affiliation has served to make us accountable to a credible ministry while still allowing us to maintain our independent, non-denominational status. We are not opposed to denominations as such—only their over-emphasis of doctrinal differences that have sometimes led to division in the Body of Christ.
We praise God for how He continues to grow our church with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. On June 8, 1997, after meeting in the school building for seven years, the Lord blessed us with a church home of our own located at 742 Miller Drive SE, right next to the Leesburg airport. We have also been blessed with 30 acres in the Town of Leesburg on which we plan to expand our current facility.
