There was a 15-20 year gap between the time that David was anointed king and when he was actually installed as the king of Israel. During that time, God grew him, refined him, and prepared him to be king. In a similar way, there are “seasons of preparation” for us too-times between where we are and where we want to be (or more specifically, where God wants us to be).
