Slavery has unfortunately been common in many civilizations, including the Roman Empire during the first century A.D. But Paul gave instructions to both slaves and masters, elevating “bondservants” to equal status within the body of Christ. Then he used the same term “bondservant” to describe himself in his relationship with Jesus.
